Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello is clearly a romantic for postcard urban landscapes. For Fall/Winter 2018, the designer set his fourth runway show for legacy French house Saint Laurent against an Eiffel Tower backdrop. This season, Vaccarello ditched the Parisian streets for New York City. He hosted an impressive, ultra-modernized pseudo-version of a party event Yves Saint Laurent hosted to fete the launch of his Opium fragrance forty years ago. Dieses Jahr, to present his Spring 2019 men’s collection across the Hudson in New Jersey’s Liberty State Park. Over thousands of square feet of shiny black gridded marble trussed 14 feet in the air.

Towered atop a massive scaffolding that emitted a slow streamline of thick fog, a glossy black marble runway that nearly blended into the Hudson’s murky waters sat between rows of bleacher seats and a breathtaking view of downtown Manhattan.

For his first fully realized men’s collection at Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello leaned all the way into Western references. Vaccarello said he wanted to represent “the idea of New York, the idea of the icons of New York in the ’70s.” It was the dive-ier Max’s Kansas City that sprung to his mind—full of the sort of dirty glamour that has proven itself an immortal style, in Spring’s case with distressed denim hoodies, patchworked boots, and show-stealing high-waisted, boot-cut trousers with just a slightly amplified flare at the kick. The accessories were also noteworthy and novel, and included boat hats and tossed-on and tangled necklaces. Indulgent and wild, but with just the right amount of polish.

High-waisted flared trousers, skintight black denim and sequined bottoms were fastened by leather western belts with oval metal buckles. Ultra-thin (almost transparent), liquid-like shirting was styled under leather blazers, crushed velvet bombers and embroidered Western jackets. The footwear range comprised of low-top skate sneakers, square-toed snakeskin and croc booties and patchwork leather cowboy boots – not a chunky dad shoe in sight. Concluding the show was a parade of silver glitter-slathered models ornamented by thin silk scarves, bandanas, long neck chains and dreamcatcher necklaces.

Each model came out artfully bathed in disco-ball silver body paint. Body glitter is usually associated nowadays with music festivals, but in the moment tonight, no such thought occurred. This was a “different interpretation of evening couture, for men, without having volume,” said Vaccarello, and indeed, the treatment lent a shine of ultra-glam masculinity that felt very on brand and also somehow . . . right. As in: sexy and now and liberated, but literally painted across the tenets of a fortified, fabulous legacy.

Though the line drew inspiration from Yves Saint Laurent’s legendary 1978 Opium fragrance launch party that hosted icons such as Cher, Truman Capote and Diana Vreeland, SS19 featured trademark Saint Laurent rocker-chic touchstones that have since defined modern-day youthful fashionistas. Guests, which included the likes of seasoned fashion industry folk and VIP regulars such as Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Lauryn Hill, Kate Moss, Dave Franco and Lakeith Stanfield, arrived in fleets of Uber cars and ferry boats that departed from Battery Park City.

Spring/Summer 2019 was a unique season for the house; despite being Vaccarello’s debut New York show, the collection marked the designer’s first proper menswear collection since taking the reigns from the label’s predecessor, Hedi Slimane, two years ago.

  1. no se tiene que gastar para verse como estos,,,,,,,en la ropa usada,,,,,,,,en la caridad,,,,,,en la basura,,,,tantos lugares tan poco tiempo

  2. I spent 15 minutes watching some terrified looking teenagers pacing awkwardly. Give them some food, … and a hug!

  3. The set was absolutely stunning but the clothes were boring, halfway through the show I wanted to switch over to something else

  4. This show is boring and basic where is the edginess and darkness which is Saint Laurent. This show has no creativity besides some of the subpar basic prints that are present on the suit jackets. I think this is a basic show and I expect so much more from a house that has done so much for fashion. I don’t even understand why skinny jeans are being sent down a runway that makes no since to me. This is hard to watch.

  5. Always disliked his design. But I have to admit this one is EXCELLENT. I know it’s hard to succeed Mr. Slimane but things change and time flies.

    Bravo Anthony!

  6. Hedi’s menswear was just… something else. Anthony is going an amazing job with womenswear but menswear is a bit weak.

  7. This collection is so sad… YSL loves colors. He would never do an all black collection, especially in the summer. Also, the looks are Hedi Sliman aesthetic, not YSL. The only good thing about this show are the silhouettes of the models and the production, nothing more.
