In a new episode of Vogue’s “Beauty Secrets“, American music star and actress Jennifer Hudson is sharing how to get the perfect cat eye swoop – two bold “swoops” of liquid black liner that she draws around her almond-shaped eyes.

With a freshly moisturized face, her crimped brown hair thrown up in a high ponytail, Hudson lightly blends in foundation with a brush, minimal concealer with a sponge, and a light powder across the T-zone for a natural-looking base. “I like my skin to breathe when I have time to breathe,” she says of her daily offstage routine. “Still, I want people to look at me and say, ‘Oh my god, you’re actually cute in person!’ ”

Next up are the eyebrows, welche, she’s not going to lie, are a lot harder to master than they look. “They shape your face," Sie sagt. After a quick dip of the brush, first with her tongue, then in her dry powder, she gets up close and personal, relying on her artistic skills to even out each brow. After applying a gel to hold them in place, she’s on to the main makeup event: an appropriately dramatic cat-eye.

“I need a swoop,” Hudson says point-blank. “If a makeup artist don’t give it to me, I’ll creep into a bathroom and give it to myself.” First, powder on the lids act as a primer. Dann, as she traces two different inky black products along the upper lash lines, following their natural arc before sharpening each tip, she starts to get creative. This is where you can cue the music—“Two wings, they’re on my face, I got, two wings, fly away, so the world can’t do me no harm,” she sings—as well as two notably different cat eye renderings; one wing is thinner, and more daytime, while the other is more evening (aka thicker and heavier, she says). “Sometimes, I have to step back and be like, ‘Okay, which one I want?’ ” Unsurprisingly, she chose more drama, and proceeded to fatten the wing along her right eye to match the other.

Getting the perfect cat eye is something a whole lot of us still struggle with, but good news: Jennifer Hudson is here to help.

“Maybe I’ll sing you a song,” says the multi-award-winning actress and musician, Jennifer Hudson. “I’m gonna fly-yyy away with my swoops.” She’s singing—in perfect falsetto, of course—about the two bold “swoops” of liquid black liner that she’s just drawn around her almond-shaped eyes. “Don’t tell me Jennifer don’t know how to do no swoops, honey.” Instead, let’s start from the beginning.

After a quick clean up of the lines with a Q-tip, Hudson throws a little mascara on before contouring her face and adding blush to her cheeks. And if you thought she was done, Gut, you’d be wrong. “The other thing I specialize in,” she says in a sultry voice, “is the lip.” After tracing red pigment along “the line that God gave me, because I like his work,” she lathers on the boldest crimson lip possible. “I do not feel right without my red lip," Sie sagt, with a kissable pucker and a few winks of her done-up eyes. “And here you have it: your ‘black Barbie supermodel with curves’ finishing look: the swoop and the lip. Thank you.” And goodnight.
