Black and White, Elegant and simple Christian Dior

The gardens of the Rodin Museum looked like they were taken from a scene from Alice in Wonderland, with a decoration that showed large torsos, ears, eyes and lips, all three-dimensional in white hanging from the ceiling as evoking humanity and surrealism.

Beautiful models with masked faces, letting glimpse their eyes sutilamente make-up under the masks adorned with feathers and velvets, paraded on a black and white chessboard, in perfect harmony with the patterns of the dresses, a binomial of stripes and white dots and black were the protagonist and almost exclusive colors of the latest collection that Maria Grazia presents for her haute couture collection Spring Summer 2018. Elegant and simple designs that evoked the subtle elegance of a bridge game, with high collars and some transparencies.

The French designer presented a feminine collection, which harmoniously combined the subtle elegance of the society lady with the majesty typical of a house at the height of Dior, where the paintings, stripes and polka dots were the predominant prints, with the exception of some Evening dresses in pastel colors and a striking design in red, which left us open-mouthed. The more feminine designs of tulle, feathers and lace that moved to the rhythm of the music, gave way to perfect tuxedos adjusted to the body, in a proposal where the most avant-garde headgear halfway between a pair of glasses and a mask also monopolized all eyes .

“And I love the masks Stephen has given us,” Chiuri said, referring to the hatter Stephen Jones. “They are reversible masks, because surrealism tries to see what lies behind it. You see the eyes, and you look at them as if you were to see yourself in the mirror. We create that through embroidery and network.”

An impressive start to the season for Dior, the parade was undoubtedly an ode to the dresses, which dazzled with its timeless design full of dots and stripes, while their models slipped spellbound to those present, almost devoid of accessories, with nothing more than the elegance worthy of black and white, embodied in clothes that fit well in the life of today’s woman, to make us dream of having them in our closet, but who does not dream of wearing a Christian Dior design?

For this collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri, got her inspiration from the beginning of the house, “There is a big difference between the Italian and French seams” she says. “Italian sewing is more linked to tailoring (therefore, more wearable); while the French one is more theatrical. I wanted a mixture of the two” and she definitely managed to combine both opposites with successes. But artistic inspiration is based on the absorption of concepts. Maria Grazia did not take the performances directly to her fashion, but used them as inspiration.

Maria Grazia had promised a much more digestible approach for the millennials, however, for many, there was nothing especially innovative in this reconstruction of the old vision of Dior, which was highly noted by the critics, who perhaps expected more day looks and less insistence on transparencies, or the dramatic touch that the feather masks provided. But in the end it was an impressive parade and an equally dramatic masked dance.
